“Decided to prank him?" I couldn’t help finishing for her.
What? I couldn’t resist the temptation.
Her tea cup stopped still on its way to her mouth…and she stared at me, a look of surprise. It didn’t faze me.
“What? Wasn’t that what you were about to say?” I added.
“No.” she said, matter-of-fact then took a long sip as I stared at her…enjoying making me wait.
“I was about to tell you the whole story.” She finally said.
“Oh.” I said, in a pretend interested tone. “Which is?”
“He hasn’t seen her in a long time.”
“Who? Lola?”
“Ah, so you know her name.” Kendra said smiling and I rolled my eyes at her.
“Anyways, I’m talking years. They dated for a while, yes. He even wanted to marry her so he proposed…at a waterfall…he said they had been doing some exploring and somehow found themselves at the Erin-Ijesha waterfall…it must have felt like the perfect moment…the sun must have been setting at that point, giving the area an orange romantic…”
“Kendra.” I said, pulling her out of whatever world she was in. “You’re diverting from the story.”
“No…that was part of the story.” She said.
“Then go straight to the point.” I took a seat and began to eat. “You can dream later.”
She rolled her eyes at me playfully then continued.
“They were engaged but she went abroad and found someone new.”
She became serious.
“ He saw the signs, the pictures, the always busy…hell he was busy too but he made sure to contact her everyday…and others stuff. He confronted her but she wouldn’t tell him at first then one day, he broke up with her to see if what he thought was true. She didn’t seem to mind, in fact, she made her relationship with the new dude public.”
“If that’s what happened…” I interrupted her. “why didn’t he tell me?”
“You didn’t give him a chance to.”
“Really? Or because he needed the time to cook it up?”
I made my bread and egg into a sandwich and took a bite.
“He didn’t look like he was lying.” She said and got up to clear her side on the table. “Plus, why would he lie to you at this point if he’s really getting married to her?”
“He didn’t lie to me, he lied to you.”
“And if you I know you well…” I continued. “You know how to add a lot of spice to a simple story.”
Her laughter rang out real loud as she rinsed her cup.
“This is serious stuff Bibi…no spice this time.”
She left me in the kitchen a little confused and trying to wrap the story around my head. It seemed too simple to be true. I mean, how had she gotten into the house? Okay maybe the gateman knew her and let her in.
I tried again.
